Cheese Fatayer

Ingredients

For the dough

  • 1 yogurt
  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 cup vegetable  oil
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 1 tbsp yeast
  • 2 tsp sugar
  • 1tsp salt

     

  • 600 g flour

For the filling

  • 250 g feta cheese
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 3 tbsp fresh parsley, minced
  • 1/2 tsp thyme

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to  210°C ( 410°F)
  2. Dissolve the yeast by mixing it with the sugar and water in a cup
  3. In a bowl whisk together yogurt , egg , oil and salt until combined, add the water yeast mixture, flour and knead until it forms a smooth soft dough.
  4. Place the dough in an oiled bowl, cover and leave it in a warm place until it doubles in size.
  5. Prepare the filling: In a bowl combine the feta, parsley, egg yolk and thyme
  6. Divide the dough into egg sized balls, roll out each ball into an oval shape and place about 2 tablespoons of filling down the center of the dough and shape a boat ( see video )
  7. Brush fatayer with egg wash and bake until golden brown
